Soft Tissue Manual Release

Yes that’s a mouthful, alright. But as complicated as it sounds, it’s a deceptively simple therapy that is absolutely essential to include in your treatment.

What is it? What does it do?

Soft Tissue Manual Release (STMR) is a treatment technique that gently breaks up and disperses the inflammation that is at the root of muscle knots, tight bands, stiff joints, muscle weakness as well as sore achy muscles. It’s a simple ‘pin and stretch’ technique in which I gently place a few fingers of one hand on a spot that anchors your muscles or tendons while slowly and gently moving your head, arm or leg.

Benefits of STMR

Helps decrease inflammation & pain

On a surface level, continuing inflammation in the musculoskeletal system (fascia, muscles, tendons, joints, and bones) is a result of an interruption of the nerve supply to an area of your body. This inflammation arises from poor circulation, overuse of a particular muscle or group of muscles, degeneration in a joint, or trauma/injury. These factors contribute to the inflammation that triggers weakness, pain, and stiffness.

Stimulates proper repair & healing of joints & soft tissue

Research demonstrates that very often, pain in one area of the body is a symptom of weakness somewhere else. That’s why I often perform very specific ‘muscle tests’ to find out where the problem is and how to correct it.

Increases range of joint movement

STMR is vital in guiding tissue to heal in the correct way. Without the application of soft tissue techniques, you are more vulnerable to the forces of gravity and to the repetitive forces present in your everyday life. In other words, going through your everyday postures and activities without focusing on proper form and receiving corrective treatment will lead to more and worse problems later on.

Prepares your muscles for rehabilitative exercise

Proper soft tissue manipulation not only addresses current inflammation and pain but also primes the muscles for rehabilitative exercise. By releasing tension and increasing blood flow to the affected areas, soft tissue techniques prepare the muscles for movement and activity, enhancing the effectiveness of rehabilitative exercises and promoting faster recovery.
