Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine can be thought of as a meal in capsule or powdered form. Just as a meal requires a variety of ingredients and seasonings to create something flavorful and complete, Chinese herbal formulas are composed of multiple herbs that work together to achieve balance and efficacy.

What is it? What does it do?

Chinese herbs are primarily plant-based and include roots, stems, leaves, bark, flowers, and even tree resins. Some formulas may also include minerals or animal products, but vegetarian or vegan options are always available upon request. Unlike Western pharmaceuticals, which isolate active compounds and often come with significant side effects, Chinese herbal medicine uses whole food materials that naturally reduce the potential for adverse effects.

Chinese herbal formulas are rarely composed of a single herb. Instead, they combine 2–15 herbs to balance and enhance their effects. Through thousands of years of practice, Chinese herbalists have discovered that these formulas are the most effective and safest way to use herbs. For example, while one herb may target a specific area of the body, others in the formula may limit its potency or enhance its effects.

How is it used?

Most herbal formulas are available in capsule or tablet form. In more complex cases, granule formulas may be used, which can be made into tea with hot water (not boiling). While the plants used in Chinese medicine are grown worldwide, I only work with herbal products from the most reputable manufacturers to ensure safety, quality, and efficacy.

The length of treatment depends on the condition being addressed. Unlike Western medicine, where long-term medication is common, Chinese herbal treatment focuses on addressing the root cause of symptoms. Once balance is restored, treatment is completed. Chronic conditions may take longer to resolve, while acute conditions typically respond more quickly.

How to take it

For best results, take herbs about 30 minutes before or after meals. If you are also taking Western medications, vitamins, or other supplements, it’s best to space them an hour or two apart from your Chinese herbs. While conflicts are rare, always let me know about any medications or treatments you are using to ensure proper care.

"I was so disheartened when my doctor told me there was nothing else he could do for me, and I would just have to live with the pain. I couldn’t believe it but after just a few treatments, with Tyme and my hip pain was gone. I’d been dealing with it for years and years, and now I feel great. I can walk without pain and get around just like I used to years ago. My doctor couldn’t believe it."
